Making the case for services that meet the family law needs of all Ontarians

On March 6, 2017, Joel Miller spoke at the Law Society of Upper Canada’s 2017 Family Law Summit. He told the crowd that lawyers are now fighting over a small number of clients because most people can’t afford traditional legal services. Until now, lawyers have been focused on how to deal with self-reps instead of how to serve them.

Joel invited other lawyers to consider how they can support the growing number of people who can’t afford traditional legal services. In particular, fixed fee services allow clients to stay in control of their costs and feel satisfied with their service. Fixed fee services also allow lawyers to access a larger pool of clients with minimal impact on overhead.

“A fixed fee invites the client to decide whether or not the cost provides value to them and whether or not they can afford it.”
